Monday tip of the week

This week's tip is brought to you by Yellow Pages.  Well, not really.  They don't know I'm doing this, and they'd probably be all kinds of pissed for what I'm about to share with you.

When I have something I need "blotted" like bacon or kale chips, I tear out a few pages of the phone book and put the food item on top of that stack.  We used to use paper towels, but phone books are free and work just as well.

Sorry Yellow Pages.  Don't hate me.  Let's face it, your days are numbered.  Ever heard of a little thing called Google?  If you need to talk to my lawyer about this tip, please call 867-5309 and ask for Jenny.

  1. Lol, just call it the phone book & you're covered. The other colored pages are just as outdated.

  2. Is it printed using vegetable ink? Other ink would be pretty unsafe to use on your food :(

    1. That isn't something I had considered before. I'll have to look in to it. But the food is only there for a short time and with the chemicals that is put in (on?) papertowels it's a wash for me.

  3. I was wondering how safe it was, too. Aside from the question about vegetable ink, what other "stuff" might be on those pages during the creation/processing of said phone book? I'm scared of phonebook germs. Really scared.

  4. i would put a single paper towel between the pages and the ink, myself, due to worry about what they use in the ink, and such. but i do use phone book pages to line pet cages with! much less ink than newspaper, so white fur doesn't get dingy, and i worry less about the critters getting sick from licking ink off themselves.

  5. It's also amazing for making paper mache things like a Pinata:)

Love your blog, and tips, and don't comment often...but, I've added you to my list of 7 blogs I'd like to award The Versatile Blogger! Details on my recent blog post. Basically, it feels a little like a chain email, but it's fun to spread the love. So, feel free to play along, or just ignore and enjoy the warm fuzzies!

  6. You should be fine with the phone book pages. Most places if not all use soy based inks. They won't hurt you. Great idea though!

  7. When I was in college, I worked in a quick service restaurant where most of what we served was deep fried in huge vats of vegetable oil. We didn't use paper towels or paper to "blot" the food. Instead, we tossed the hot food onto metal trays that had holes in them to allow the grease to drain off. The food we served stayed crisp and most of the grease drained off.

I haven't bought paper towels in more than a decade. At first, I tried using cloth napkins. Then, I used paper. Then, I thought about my college experience, and I started putting those foods on a metal tray to "drain." It works great, and there's no worry and no waste, because the tray just gets washed when I'm finished :).
